Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol as an open standard for connecting AI assistants to repositories, business tools and development environments.

Enterprise context is fragmented across CRM, ERP, document systems, ticketing, EHR, data warehouses and vertical applications. A model isolated from those sources remains generic; a model with indiscriminate access becomes dangerous.

Useful assistants should retrieve only records the user is entitled to see and expose narrow actions rather than entire administrative interfaces.

Build a governed context layer: preserve user identity, constrain tools, log access, distinguish read from write permissions and design integrations so model vendors can change without rebuilding the business workflow.
